Allen and David had lived in Chicago for more than 10 years when they decided to explore places, while on vacation, that might take their lives in a new direction. To be honest, they tried Tahiti first, but the distance from the US, the cost of living, and the difficulty owning property made them look further. Most went to the central Pacific coast for the (relatively) nearby gay resorts of Manuel Antonio and Quepos. To reach the northern Pacific coast, you had to drive 5-6 hours from San Jose, and once there, work with the few tourist resources in the area.

In December, 2002, Delta Airlines started a once-daily flight from Atlanta to Costa Rica’s new international airport in Liberia, landing visitors one hour from the beautiful Pacific beaches and sunsets on the northern coast. No one could have imagined that by now the Liberia airport would welcome 50 weekly international flights from North America, with European airlines soon to follow. |
